The grade II* listed Mitre Hotel Image has 13th century origins although the present buildings are largely of 17th and 19th century construction. The site has been the property of Lincoln College since 1450 and since 1968 the hotel's bedrooms have been student accommodation. When I occupied one of these rooms in 1981/82, the courtyard below (through this gateway) was a beer garden, and noisy in the summer. The whole building has been completely but sympathetically renovated in recent years, the courtyard being reclaimed for college use, and this new stone entrance bears the date 2021 beneath - of course- the Bishop's mitre.
