Looking south along Brighton Road, this shows a northbound bus on Route 598. The bus belongs to Epsom Buses, a subsidiary of Epsom Coaches. Route 598 had not been in existence long. It had started a few years earlier (with coaches in use rather than buses) between Epsom and Coulsdon, not being then allowed to operate north of Coulsdon. The first digit, 5, of the route number indicated that it was a service subsidised by Surrey County Council. By the time of this photograph, the northern extension to Croydon had been allowed, and it was worked by the dual-purpose Leylands of which this is an example.
