The sandstone Walton Hall was built in the 1830’s by Thomas Greenall who owned Greenall’s Brewery in nearby Warrington. After he died, his son took over the business and expanded the brewery and made improvements to Walton Hall adding extensions and building a clock tower. With continual wealth in the family, much surrounding land was bought and other buildings improved. Fine landscape gardens were constructed in the grounds. The grandson of Thomas Greenall became Lord Daresbury but on his death in 1938 the estate had to be sold to pay off death duties. During World War II the hall was used to station troops and the garden greenhouses were used to grow tomatoes. After the war, the grounds were open to the public.
