Despite appearances, the building on the right is still part of an operational textile mill. Cloth has been produced here since the 15th century but the site became important in the 19th century when the adjacent canal made it much easier to bring coal and other raw materials in and take the finished products out. A series of fires in the 1870s led to a new mill being built that used both steam and water power. Today the site specialises in the production of cloth for sports use including the coverings for snooker tables and tennis balls. The track seen here passes through the mill site to a bridge over the Stroudwater Navigation.
