A large gap is now visible on the eastern side of Beverley Road, following the demolition of a derelict portion of Brunswick Arcade. The affected section of the late Victorian terrace had stood vacant and increasingly unstable for many years, surrounded by scaffolding and, latterly, a cosmetic building wrap (see Image for its appearance before the start of work). Restoration work at 52a-54 Beverley Road, began in October 2021 as part of the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage Scheme. The plan is now for the gap to be filled by a re-creation of the original facade, with shop units on the ground floor, and residential flats on the first, second, and third floors. As can be seen here, the work has necessitated cutting the usable width of Beverley Road by half, yet another contribution to the city's already heavily-congested roads. The £1.4m funding for the project comes from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the city council. It is due to be completed in autumn 2022.
