This is one of a series of lime kilns along the outcrop of the Smiddy Limestone above Rookby and Winton. The hillside in the background is High Edge, which is formed on the rather younger Jew Limestone (called the Hardraw Scar Limestone further east, and also on the adjoining Kirby Stephen sheet only a few hundred metres to the south) and its underlying sandstone. On the escarpment, the Jew Limestone dips at 23° away from the photographer (east), but the outcrops curve round and in the foreground, the dip is to the north (left) and a little steeper.
