The wall represents the lower (northern) boundary of the CROW Access Land on Winton Fell, which grants a right to roam up the estate track above Intake Gill towards High Dolphin Seat. Whilst the most-used routes of ascent onto Nine Standards Rigg are beset by problems of erosion, leading to restrictions on the paths to be used at different seasons by those doing Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk (avoiding the summit completely in the winter months), the track here provides good solid dry footing at an easy gradient to within half a kilometre of the summit - definitely the best way up if you want to avoid those restrictions whilst not contributing to the problems.
