When Bristol Waterworks was established in the mid-1800s it had the task of supplying good water to the growing city of Bristol. A large reservoir was constructed in north Somerset, which was gravity fed. However, with a need for an increasing amount of daily water, this reservoir was built to take some of the load off the supply and fed by pumps. It was originally an open air facility but was roofed over in the 1930s.
