Petrol supplies ran low after news of tanker driver shortages emerged and people erred on filling up early. This extra demand emptied far more petrol stations than had supply issues and a genuine fuel shortage appeared due to the fear of one. The low stocks in supermarkets due to driver shortages probably encouraged people to believe that deliveries may be badly affected.
