In 1982 this was a standard grade Youth Hostel (£2.60 per night for those aged 21 and over, sleeping in dormitories) described in the YHA Handbook as "Enlarged cottage in a small town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park...". Then it gave the location as "Centre of the village"!
