The inscription on the village hall is to John Britton (1771-1857). He was a local celebrity, who had to endure terrible personal circumstances as a young person and was forced to London for work. After many and varied forms of employment he finally found fame and success as a writer of antiquities. Indeed, it is often said his works helped to make British monuments and antiquities the movement is still is today.
