Wem Town Hall on High Street was built in 1905 and now operates as a community arts centre. Today only the facade of the original building remains; the rest was destroyed in a fire in 1995. That incident caused something of a national stir when a local amateur photographer took a photograph which appeared to show a young woman at one of the windows in the burning building. The figure had not been noticed either by firefighters or onlookers at the time and was only revealed when the film was processed. Locals suggested that she was the ghost of Jane Chum who had been accused of starting the 'great fire of Wem' in 1677.
