Stephenson was a key figure in the development of the North Midland, later Midland, Railway, and lived locally at Tapton House for the last 10 years of his life. The statue, by Stephen Hicklin, was erected in 2005 as part of the redevelopment of the station. It shows Stephenson holding a model of his iconic early locomotive for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, Locomotion No.1 standing astride a wheel based on the 'Rocket' locomotive for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. No.40 on the Chesterfield Art Trail.
