Built 1899 for the William Stones (Sheffield) brewery with the function of a station hotel for the adjacent Market Place Station, opened in 1897. The latter was just beyond the pub and was built by the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway. The railway never reached either Lancashire or the East Coast, where ports were planned to ship coal from the Derbyshire coalfield, and in practice the line had relatively low passenger numbers, the service being withdrawn in 1951.
