County Hall stands on the site of the former gaol, originally part of the medieval castle. The gaol was demolished in 1936 in preparation for the construction of the County Hall in 1936. World War II delayed building work and the hall wasn't completed until 1955, and officially opened in 1956. County Hall was designed by Percy Thomas in the French Renaissance style and built by W.T. Nicholls of Gloucester. It was built in grey Forest of Dean stone.
