Crosville DLB978 at Birkenhead Woodside ? 1968

Crosville's X3 service is thought to have been the longest bus route operated by double deck buses in the UK, running between Liverpool and Caernarfon. It called at Birkenhead Woodside before continuing through the Mersey Tunnel to Liverpool. At this time the only daytime bus services to use the tunnel were Crosville services from Liverpool to Cheshire and North Wales but were not allowed to carry local passengers between Liverpool and Birkenhead to protect the ferry and rail services. Behind the bus is the empty space left by the demolition of Birkenhead Woodside Station http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6702647 The bus is a Bristol Lodekka LD with ECW bodywork, new in 1959. It was one of six buses from that year's deliveries for Crosville to have a detachable roof to enable them to be used on open-top services in the North Wales resorts during the summer period. The cream livery reflects this use, but was also applied to buses fitted with coach seats for long distance services.
