The lefthand part was originally built in the 14th or early 15th century, and a similar righthand wing added in the 16th; the left wing is a rare survival of an openhall construction, with a cusped arch-braced and wind-braced roof. The whole building was Grade II* listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101177807-old-guildhall-newport#.YLyFc_lKjIU & https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1177807 in 1952. The conversion of the ground floor from domestic use, and addition of the shop fronts, is probably a 19th century alteration.
