The remains of the demolished pump house that was supplied from a below ground 24,000 gallon tank. Image RAF SOUTHROP - OVERVIEW KEY FACTS: The airfield opened in August 1940 as an RLG for No. 23 Group at RAF South Cerney. The Group was responsible for advanced flying training using Airspeed Oxfords and North American Harvards. Dispersed communal sites were located in Macaroni Woods. c.1940/41. Airfield expanded with a host of facilities to become a full training airfield. The following units were based here at various times: No 2 (P) AFU, Pilot Advanced Flying Unit No 2 SFTS, Service Flying Training School No 3 (P) AFU, Pilot Advanced Flying Unit No 6 SFTS, Service Flying Training School No 27 Group Communications Flight No 27 (Signals Training) Group No 1539 Beam/Blind Approach Training Flight. Based here and at RAF South Cerney. The station closed in 1945.
