Then as now, High Street was the principal bus departure location in the town, although there has been substantial revision to the road layout https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6216537. Northern General bus 2103 is just leaving on the long route 55 to Newcastle. Northern was the only operator other than London Transport to purchase Routemaster buses – 50 in total between in 1964/5, although they were distinguished from the London standard by having forward entrances rather than open platform rear entrances.
