At one time, it was not unusual to find fords crossing quite major rivers. Nowadays, it is much more convenient to drive round via the nearest bridge and virtually all the old fords have fallen into disuse. There is little sign remaining of the ford which crossed the North Tyne at this point apart from the fact that the river here is shallow and fast-flowing, and the representation of it as a ford on the OS 1:25000 map is of historic interest only.
