There has been a church on this site for over 500 years. There is a plaque commemorating this on the gatepost. See Image and Image The original church of St Michael and All Angels was designed by John Carr in 1761. It was rebuilt in 1885, and the cupola from the original church relocated to the side of the churchyard. See Image The church now serves the Romanian Orthodox community, and is known as the Church of Saint Makarios the Great.
