As documented on other photos in this square the track on the left takes Eastbound trains towards the Forth Rail Bridge, and the track on the right takes them towards Edinburgh. What caught my eye though were two things: Firstly the Edinburgh line is electrified and the Forth Rail Bridge one is not. So this either means that hybrid trains are operating (ones that can switch between diesel and electric according to the track), or that diesel trains are still often running down electrified tracks. Secondly, there is a sign saying Winchburgh Junction (on the left of the picture). This runs parallel to the track so the driver will not see it, and surely the maintenance engineers have a good enough knowledge of their patch to know where they are! So it can only be for the passengers. I have no idea if this is commonplace - will have to keep my eyes peeled when covid comes to an end and travelling for fun is back on the agenda!
