Stanstead sign is double sided. This side which faces north, shows the church of St James in the background and a Norman warrior and two shields. On a banner the names of Bernay, Walsham and Hugh de Montfort in a bush of white roses. The abbey of St Mary of Bernay Montfort was Lord of the Manor at the time of Domesday.
