This beautiful edifice, built in the late English style, dates from the 13th century. It underwent modifications in the Victorian period. On Sunday, 1st February, 1741, Howell Harris, a leading Calvinist Evangelical firebrand, on his first missionary journey to the wilds of North Wales, attended matins at Holy Cross. The vicar, Chancellor John Owen, a fierce opponent of Calvinists and Calvinism, and who in the absence of a resident bishop at Bangor ruled the diocese, let rip during his sermon. So moved were the congregation that they stoned Harris as he made his way out through the churchyard.
