Since the Second World War, when a large area of the Norfolk breckland was commandeered by the army, Thompson has been a village on the road to nowhere. Old signposts pointing to 'Road closed ahead', as here, reinforce the slightly eerie feel. This is looking along Tottington Road; Tottington was one of the villages evacuated by the army.
