The grave inscription reads: To the memory of Mary, wife of James Kavanagh of Penmaen, who was murdered by ... on the 3rd October 1829, aged 75 years. It is believed that the blank line in the inscription was designed to prick the conscience of the unknown murderer and get him to confess his sins. The newspaper, The Cambrian, reported that Mary was 75 years old when she was found face down in the garden of her cottage in Penmaen on 6 October 1829, her head battered. The murderer was never found. See also Image
