This is the Soho Loop, looking east towards Winson Green Junction (with the new main line) on a dull and drizzly morning*. Ahead is a bridge carrying the railway between Smethwick Rolfe Street and Birmingham New Street stations on the Rugby-Birmingham-Stafford Line. The locomotive is a London Midland Class 170 Turbostar DMU. I cannot recognise the number. The Soho Loop is a remnant of the original contour hugging Birmingham Canal Navigations Main Line to Wolverhampton, engineered by Brindley, 1768-1772. It was superseded by Thomas Telford's new main line, mainly between 1824 and 1827. * I do apologise for the blemish on the image caused by a rain spot on the lens. :-(
