Presuming it is oil but could be diesel I suppose - at any rate the farmer's tractor needs some maintenance. You can see a thin wavy line in the snow at the bottom of the picture. The gate is at the Southern point of what used to be the Wilsontown Railway Junction. A railway, still shown on 1950s OS maps, branched off the still-running Edinburgh-Carstairs line here. I didn't see any obvious signs of this in the snow - just livestock pens, a couple of metal huts and a small chicken shed - but it does explain the unexpected busyness of the terrain round here.
