Number 5 Crown Street was originally a 15th century open hall house with a gabled crosswing added a little later. The house was remodelled and extended in the 17th century and altered in the mid/late 19th century. Timber framed and rendered with a late 19th century brick shop front to the crosswing. The hall floor was inserted in the late 16th or early 17th century. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1233867 Castle Hedingham is a small village in Essex about 15 miles north west of Colchester. The village developed around the Norman castle and is home to a large number of timber framed medieval buildings. The village’s railway station which was opened in 1867, closed in 1964 and was dismantled and rebuilt in 1974 on a new site to the north west of the village by the Colne Valley Railway Preservation Society.
