A large locomotive shed was required at Birkenhead to cater for the heavy level of traffic from the docks. In later years this included the working of the heavy iron ore trains from Bidston Dock to the John Summers steel works at Shotton on the mid-Wirral line. These were generally hauled by a pair of these BR standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives. This view also shows a classic concrete coaling tower, as well as a small hopper to deal with locomotive ash.
