Penbank's cluster of small buildings contrast with the large cold store about 2 km away. Penbank was once a busy point on the Calder, with a weir, a lock, a ferry and a pub called the Lord Nelson Inn. It lost its importance after the new canal through Stanley Ferry opened in 1839.
