This pub was built in the 1930's on the site of Barker’s Brewery which had been founded in 1825 by brothers Richard and William Barker. The new public house was named after the Rose & Crown, which faced the brewery but ceased trading in 1938 (it was demolished for road widening in 1967). In 2003 it was renamed The Wheatsheaf after the old inn which had faced the church entrance on Blue Bell Lane and was demolished in the late 1890's. In 2011, these premises were refurbished by J D Wetherspoon and named Barker's Brewery to retain the history of the site.
