Over the years many industries were located along the banks of the Dee, one of the last was J Nicholls & Sons Tobacco & Snuff merchants which was established in 1780 until its closure in the late 1950's. This waterwheel is all that remains of the mill and warehouses on Mill Street which were demolished and replaced by the very ugly Salmon Leap flats in the 1960's. Despite being restored in 1988, this last remaining waterwheel of the original eleven seems in poor condition.
