After heavy overnight rain this outlet was discharging a large quantity of surface water into the North Sea. When the first Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area was published in 1865, long before the sea defences were constructed, a stream flowed along the northern edge of Cullercoats Village and discharged into the North Sea at this point. The stream also marked the traditional boundary between the old Whitley Bay Municipal Borough and Tynemouth County Borough.
