The North Walsham and Dilham Canal and canal bridge is the primary element on the sign. It was a large undertaking with eight lock gates, but had only modest success. Opened in 1826 and lasted just over 100 years it was in fierce competition with roads and railways and was constrained to coping with only three wherries a day which didn’t help matters. All that remains of the windmill is the name of Mill Road. The two brick kilns (top right) have also long gone but the name of The Brickground bears witness to their past existence.
