Viewed in the sidings at the east of Salisbury station from the Mill Stream Approach car park. They are D7042 and D7072. The 'Hymek' (class 35) locomotives had hydraulic transmission and were built specifically for the Western Region of British Railways. 101 were built between 1961 and 1964 by Beyer Peacock (Hymek) Ltd. They had a short life as they were deemed non-standard by BR which had settled on electric transmission as the norm. All had been withdrawn by 1975. Four have survived into preservation and are to be found at The West Somerset Railway (D7017 & D7018), the Severn Valley Railway (D7029) and the East Lancashire Railway (D7076). The date of the image is speculative but is certainly early to mid-70s. Both of those in the photo had been withdrawn by 1972, so they may well have been stored awaiting disposal.
