The station has a unique, for the UK, V-shaped formation, with one arm serving the east and southern lines, the other the line serving the Far North and Kyle of Lochalsh. In Highland Railway days trains from the south and east would run past the station and reverse into one of the platform lines seen here, to make passengers' transition to the northern services easier; a similar procedure was followed for trains from the north.
