During lockdown, the UK government gave local councils finance for temporary traffic measures to encourage travel by bicycle and to avoid use of public transport. Part of Magdalen Road was made one-way with a contraflow cycle lane and extra space for pedestrians. The red and white barrier separates pedestrians from the contraflow lane.
