St Catherine's College can trace its history back to 1868 when a society, or delegacy, was formed for students at Oxford University who were unattached to any college. This later became the St Catherine's Society and the decision to transform it into a proper college was taken in the 1950s. Land was acquired from Merton College (whose playing field is still adjacent) and the building, designed by Arne Jacobsen of Denmark, was completed in 1964. The basic design echoes the traditional colleges but obviously the look and feel is quite different.
