When the first Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area was published in 1865, the Seaton Burn at this point, was crossed via a ford. A bridge, also known as Seghill Bridge, which carried the, "Highway leading from Morpeth to Seghill" across the burn stood a few score yards to the west of this point. By the time of the publication of the second Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map in 1897, this bridge had been constructed and the line of the road ahead established in its present position.
