Dundas Street in Edinburgh has been [unofficially] renamed Emancipation Street, following demonstrations against historical figures who profited from slavery in the 17-19C. Henry Dundas [1742-1811] was a Scottish advocate and Tory politician who was considered a powerful man in Edinburgh in the eighteenth century. Wilberforce's 1792 motion for immediate cessation of the slave trade was heading for certain defeat, but Dundas' amendment to insert the word 'gradual' into the motion is thought to have ensured a successful vote for the ultimate abolition of the trade in slaves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Dundas,_1st_Viscount_Melville https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/people/emancipation-street-and-teach-colonial-history-signs-appear-around-edinburgh-blm-activists-2896293 Update 28 July 2020; By the end of July all these 'new' street names had disappeared, but I have not been able to establish why or by whom. They could have been removed by the protesters; removed, or required to be removed, by the City Council - it is a Conservation Area; or removed by the property owners.
