English primary schools and nurseries were to begin a phased return to school on 1 June, with the first children to return being those in nurseries, reception and year 1, as well as those in the last year of primary school, year 6. Not every school was, however, keen to reopen, leaving it a week or two later, and some said they were not ready as yet.
