Ionica was a telecoms provider based in Cambridge that briefly flourished in East Anglia in the late 1990s. It used microwave technology to provide an alternative to BT's cables & these distinctive octagonal receivers became a widespread sight. Unfortunately technical problems, such as interference by heavy rain, together with the rapid uptake of mobile phones, spelt the company's end early in 1999 without it being able to extend its services across the UK. More than 20 years on & there are still receivers to be seen - testament to the very brief life of a company that had been valued at £1bn.
