Hopwas Pumping Station - beam engines

This South Staffordshire Water Works Company pumping station housed a pair of single cylinder beam engine built in 1880 by Gimson & Company of Leicester. This shows the view from the door. The engines have cylinders 25" x 5" fitted with Meyer expansion slide valves. The flywheels are 14' diameter. The engines were rated at 50 horsepower at 17-20 rpm on steam at 35-40 psi. They were both removed for preservation in 1987 and the engine house is now a house. One engine is now on display at Forncett Industrial Steam Museum. The other was on display at Snibston Discovery Centre until that was closed and demolished, so it is now in store.
