This marker post indicates that the path is a public footpath which, once up the steps ahead and on level ground, follows the route of an old waggonway. The waggonway, which was a branch of the Blyth & Tyne Railway, stretched from Hartley Pit to Seaton Sluice, serving both the Hartley Bottle Works and the nearby Iron Works. Close to this point the waggonway crossed the Seaton Burn over a wooden viaduct. For a selection of detailed free to download walking routes in the area visit www.northtynesidewalks.co.uk
