Looking towards Barton on a bright May morning. This bridge once spanned the Cambridge-Bedford-Oxford Varsity Line, whose trackbed is now an access road on the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory site. Built to carry the horse-drawn traffic of the 1860s, the line's bridges were lightly constructed and those which remain have been strengthened in recent years. They originally had corrugated-iron parapets, but these have been replaced by a conventional blue-brick wall. See Image] and Image] for what the originals looked like in 2012.
