In 1926 William Outram established and built a service station known as 'South Grange Garage' on Earsdon Road, West Monkseaton. Eventually, the garage simply became known as 'Outrams Garage'. The actual building was based on a South American design which William Outram brought back from Brazil after a visit there in the early 1920's.
