These balustrades, on the main upper promenade, formed part of the sea defence scheme for the Central Lower Promenade as referred to at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6445920, a scheme which was completed in 2018. In 2019 it was named the best medium project at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Robert Stephenson Awards.
