Whittlesey's most famous son was born in this house on St Mary's Street. He became a general in the British army and is best known for his victory in the Battle of Aliwal in India. This house is now named Aliwal House and has a commemorative plaque on the front wall and the local college is also named after him, The Sir Harry Smith Community College. Until a few years ago a local pub The Hero of Aliwal was also named after his most famous battle victory, https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3220114
