Headed by 'Royal Scot' class 4-6-0 locomotive 46102 'Black Watch'. These locomotives were introduced in 1927 to handle the principal expresses on the WCML prior to the introduction of the 'Coronation' pacifics. They were all rebuilt in the 1940s with an improved boiler. Heavy trains were a feature of the WCML and 14-coach rakes like this were not unusual.
